Well, for our time of study in God's word this morning, let me invite you to turn in your Bibles to Genesis. Genesis chapter one. And my goal this morning will be to cover Genesis chapter one verses one. Through 5.
Today is the genesis of our study through Genesis. I know that's lame, but I've been itching to say that. The word Genesis means beginning. And that is essentially the first word that we encounter in the book of Genesis, the first noun, I, I would say.
and that title fits because Genesis is the book of beginnings. In this book, we find the beginnings of the universe, the beginnings of the sun, and the moon and the stars, the beginnings of plant and animal life. The beginnings of mankind, the beginning of marriage and family, the beginning of sin, the beginning of redemption, the beginnings of nations and languages, and the beginnings of God's plan to bless all of the nations of the earth through his chosen people, the descendants of Abraham. This is why Genesis is called Genesis.
It is the story of beginnings, and we're blessed to be launching on this journey of the study of all of these beginnings and more in the Book of Genesis. Moses, by most counts, would have written the Book of Genesis at some point. During the wilderness wanderings of the children of Israel, at some point prior to them entering into the promised land. Apparently, Moses felt that the Jews, in order to be equipped to set up life for themselves in the Land of Promise and to live well, he felt like they needed to know history....
