Well, 1 Timothy chapter 6, verse 17, we've been looking at the 6th chapter of 1 Timothy for a few weeks now. And if you look at it, it, there's several themes that go on here in this chapter. But one theme that keeps coming up is the theme of riches, of wealth, money, possessions. Things that are of value and, and it's all through the chapter.
In fact, Paul begins chapter 6 with speaking to slaves, those people who don't have very much money, who are serving someone else with a lot of money. And he goes on to give them instructions about their life in the absence of money and riches, and then he goes to attack the false teachers. There were false teachers that were attacking the Church of Ephesus, and part of the false teaching was this desire to be wealthy and this, this preaching on that godliness comes with great material gain. And he takes us through some of the verses there, verses 89, and 10.
Those who desire to be rich fall into temptation. Paul tells us, and the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And he tells Timothy, you, oh man of God, flee these things, flee the love of money, and all of this false teaching that comes with it, and pursue the Lord. And then when we get to verse 17, he comes back to the theme of riches of wealth.
And it's this verse that I want to look at. Originally I was going to preach all three verses 1718, 19, but there's so much in this one verse that I want us to look at this morning. Let's read it together. Instruct verse 17, instruct those who are rich in this present world, not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy....
