Our Lord, we ask that you would prepare our hearts to receive your word this morning, and that you would break up any stony ground or unbelief in our hearts. We ask that you would plant your word deep inside of us and cause it to bear fruit, that you would open up our ears to hear the truth. We ask Lord that this morning that you would show us Christ, and that you would reveal your glory through the preaching of your word. That every heart this morning may confess Jesus Christ as Lord.
For where else can we go, Lord, you have the words of eternal life. This we pray in Christ's name. Amen. I'm teaching a course right now on Sundays, called the Church is One Foundation.
We're doing a survey of church history and one of the interesting parts of church history is the development of what we call the monastic movement. It's basically this movement in the church where some believers began to grow disenfranchised with the gathered church, the local church. They began to see worldliness in the church. They began to see lots of problems, people coming into the church and bringing their sin and bringing their worldliness and bringing their lusts and desires.
And so there were a group of people that began to move out away from the local church and began to go live in the desert. These were early on called desert hermits. later on, they referred to them as, as monks. one type of monk....
